Importance of Internship for Career Building
The economy is dynamic and with that skills and experience needed to be a part of the changing cycle too.
Nowadays, recruiters
heavily rely on the CV that presents a full history of academic credentials, relevant
work experience whether it’s from volunteering, internships, or past job
experience.
Now, in a competitive world where employers look
for experience rather than 10 CGPA, what should a fresher do in such a
scenario?
Take a moment and ponder over this point. If one is
looking for experienced, the only way for a fresher is to work as an intern
which is the most advantageous course of action.
That one summer or winter internship which you have
done can make a difference between getting your dream job or missing the
opportunity.
If still you are not convinced, look at the
following points:
1. Gain Real Life Experience and Exposure:
If you successfully land a suitable internship based upon your future choices, it will be the stepping stone for your bright career.
Interns are not thrown into the lion’s den burdening them with projects
and tasks; rather they are given proper training without and pressure of
deadlines.
Internships
provide a gateway to the corporate world.
2. Platform to Learn More about Yourself:
“Information is not knowledge. The
only source of knowledge is experience. You need the experience to gain
wisdom.” – Albert Einstein
Your internship will not only develop your personality but also will
give you a chance to introspect.
To know yourself is to know your destination and how to achieve
it.
For example, take a Finance Student who decides to do an internship
related to this field. The internship will give him a chance to explore this
field and what all work is done in this sector.
At
this point, the student has two options: continue with his decided goal or
change it and try something different.
3. Build Your ProfessionalNetwork:
Your network is your net worth.
Being an intern gives you more opportunities to build connections with
professionals and with interns having similar interests which can be very
beneficial for your future.
Even
if you think it’s unnecessary, it’s always good to have a backup plan. Life is
unprecedented and a time may arise when a network may come in handy.
4. Prevent Resume from going into Trash:
Everyone aims to get their dream job. But before having this long-term
goal, prepare for your short-term goal i.e., to crack the Interview. Now, the
question arises how to do so? Well, there is one particular part of your CV– Experience. Internships
are the best way to enhance your experience. When an employer sees that you
have completed your internship for 5-6 months, he is convinced that you are
productive.
It’s not enough to mention the company’s name; list all the tasks you
have completed.
The
more experience you gain, the better you find yourself during the interview.
5. GainProfessionalism:
Soft
skills are very important for an individual in any phase of life. And for a
career, it’s an essential part since it improves one able to work in any
corporate.
Internships
provide students with relevant soft skills needed in the workplace. Skills such
as communication, leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, etc. can be learned
through an internship can be used throughout your life.
6. Get Professional Feedback:
Internship is not a one-way process; it’s two ways. Not only will you be
working for the organization you intern with, but they’ll help you out too.
While professors will prepare you for the theoretical side of your field, internships provide opportunities for receiving feedback from someone who works in your desired field daily.
7. Teaches you about the importance of work-life balance:
When you go to college, you have a fixed schedule that spares you with ample time to take nap or to hang out with your friends. However, a typical office schedule is quite different. By doing an internship, you get to learn about how to prioritize tasks such as socializing or completing chores before and after your workday. This helps you to develop your time-management skills, how to structure your daily routine to balance your professional and personal life without compromising either.
8. Switch to a Full-Time Position:
Sometimes
graduating from college and immediately jumping up into a job has its cons. If
you have never worked full-time before, the change may be difficult. You will
not be able to adapt to the new workplace.
The internship offers opportunities to transition into a full-time
position.
With an internship, you get an opportunity to showcase your talent, commitment, and value to the organization. Also, employers are more interested in hiring you since they’ve invested time and money in you.
So next time, you have a summer or winter break,
consider doing an internship and make use of your spare time fruitfully.
